Barley Films Summer Programme 2007

Los Angeles

In the summer of 2007 two of our “Little Caribou“ team travelled to Los Angeles for a series of tutorials with several US based animation industry veterans including:

Richie Baneham, James Baxter, Stephan Franck, Eric & Sue Goldberg, Bert Klein, Jennifer Cardon-Klein, Mike Nguyen, Shane Prigmore & Shannon Tindall.

They all provided us with some excellent advice regarding possible approaches to character development, design and performance for our first feature in development “Little Caribou”. We were also able to view several of the Marc Davis Animation Lectures at the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences in Hollywood.

We are also extremely grateful to The Arts Council for their support in relation to this trip.

Barley Films Summer Programmes 2006

Los Angeles & San Francisco

In the late summer of 2006 several artists from the studio visited Los Angeles and San Francisco to meet with a number of animation professionals working at major studios in Los Angeles and San Francisco. There we had the opportunity to present our current projects to them for their review. They included:

Richie Baneham, Dave Brewster & Wendy Perdue, Mark Farquhar, Robert Fox
Stephan Franck, Eric & Sue Goldberg, Jack Hsu & Fergal Reilly
Jennifer Cardon Klein and Bert Klein, Teddy Newton
Mike Nguyen, Peter Sohn

They provided us with some excellent animation and film-making advice as well as insights into their own working methods. We greatly appreciate the time they took from their schedules to meet with us and share their experience.

Barley Films Summer Programmes 2006

Dublin

Earlier in the summer of 2006 we were lucky enough to have a visit from animation director Mike Nguyen of July Films. Mike gave a series of talks and tutorials to the artists at the studio and the experience was very inspirational and informative. He was also kind enough to screen the workreel of his charming feature length film My Little World on which he is currenly in production in the USA.

Barley Films Summer Programmes 2005

Barley Films has now completed the summer series of traditional character animation programmes for 2005. As part of the first programme, aimed at existing animation students and recent graduates, we held three sessions of animation traineeships. The course structure was similar to the model used last year where each day was composed of an educational element (lectures, screenings, etc.) and a practical element (work on traditional animation scenes). These traineeships ran for between two and five weeks. The second programme, run over four weeks and aimed at graduates, was designed to determine the suitability of candidates in the areas of design, storyboarding and animation for work on our first feature length animated film which is currently being developed at our Dublin studio.

Barley Films Animation Training Programme 2004

During the summer of 2004 we established our first traditional character animation training programme at the studio. The
six week long full-time course was aimed at existing animation students and recent graduates. It included lectures, tutorials,
screenings and work on test scenes for one of the company's short films, Santa's Blues.
