Corona Cork Film Festival - Claire Lynch Award for Best First-Time Irish Director of a Short Film

"This film’s anarchic sense of humour and fresh story-telling captivated both the jury and the audience. An innovative and impressive first film, this director is also someone to watch out for in the coming years."

We are delighted to announce that "The Rooster, the Crocodile and the Night Sky" has been officially selected as the supporting animation film for the 2008 Screen Directors Guild of Ireland (SDGI) Finders Series. It was selected from all the animation shorts entered into the Galway Film Fleadh 2008 as the single film to support the winner of the Finders Series - the animated feature film "The Secret of Kells" directed by Tomm Moore from The Cartoon Saloon. The films were screened at the Directors Guild of America in Hollywood on the 19th September 2008.

A little bit about us...

Barley Films was founded in Ireland in 2002 by Barry O'Donoghue to produce animated films. Our first two short films, "Boys Night Out" (2003) and "Agricultural Report" (2004), have been nominated for Annie awards by ASIFA-Hollywood, the International Animated Film Society. "Agricultural Report" has gone on to win ten international awards and screen in over one hundred festivals. Other shorts currently on the festival circuit include "Charred & Feathered" (2007) and the award-winning "The Red Ball" (2007).

We have just completed three new shorts for 2008 - "Colour Contamination" directed by Louise Bagnall, "Pirogues" directed by Alice Bohl and "The Rooster, the Crocodile and the Night Sky" directed by Padraig Fagan. Louise is currently directing her next short "Donkey" at the studio for release in 2009.

We are also developing our first animated feature length project "Little Caribou" for production in Ireland in 2009.

We take our cartoons pretty seriously (hopefully not too seriously!) and with that in mind we're always looking for ways to improve our work as we continue to set high standards for our artists at the studio. Hence the importance of our extensive training programmes which you can also read about below.
